2004 German Critics Award for Crime Fiction and Winner of 2007 Premier Special Director Book Award Semana Negra, Spain

Moore does a great job in Zero Hour of depicting two places I hope to never be - a seedy lakeside brothel, which doubles as a murder scene and the inside of a real life Cambodian prison, where life is not just cheap, to some it's worthless. Moore seeks out societies at crossroads and he finds one in Cambodia, but in the process he tells the reader a ripper of a yarn with the added bonus of making us realize how unlucky some people are or conversely how lucky we are.

Book Description

"Freedom is addictive" Bicycle touring, for the Travises, is the purest realization of a free life. Tim and Cindie travel farther outside their comfort zone than ever before. They encountered oppressive communism, thieves; and a fist fight with a drunken man in rural Vietnam. Exposure to War and Genocide were reminders of how precious life can be. Despite all this the Travises once again were humbled by the warmth and friendliness of humanity.

Book Description

Visit Cambodia with our little book of cultural Do’s and Don’ts will guide you through this wonderful land ensuring you emerge in love with the country and its hospitable people.

Our advice might sometimes lead you to suspect that Cambodia is the wild west of Asia where oddballs and eccentrics go off the rails. As Phnom Penh resident Dr. David Hill explains, there are foreign visitors who completely lose their way. But for most of the millions of visitors to this antique kingdom, Cambodia is a jewel and so different from anywhere else.

Dr. Hill guides us through the Do’s and Don'ts of the splendors of Angkor Wat, the bustle of Phnom Penh and the pristine beaches of Sihanoukville. He helps us to understand the Khmer Rouge period, and to learn where you Do or Don’t ask Cambodians about that history or if they prefer to forget.

On the lighter side, this outstanding guide gives you tips on superstitions, magic, body language, Buddhism, how to have a safe night on the town, and what to Do or Not To Do if you're invited to a wedding, funeral, sleepover, or a shopping spree. The author guides your every steps to ensure that your aura repels the most potent of spells and that your shopping expeditions and treks will be happy and successful.

To ensure that you, the foreign resident, fleeting visitor or armchair traveler, enjoy your stay in Cambodia Dr. Hill presents a light hearted but practical guide to the Do’s and Don'ts of this wonderful country. DO be nice to three colored male cats because they bring good luck. If someone asks if you want a dahleng DON'T confuse it with an offer of romance. DO speak with a smile and never get cross and complain loudly. Want to know more? Then DO buy this book!

Book Description

Microfinance had been more a social nature of its services, which had been operated alike the form of humanitarian agencies. However, the current focus is turning to sustain the institution by self-generating the incomes and providing the services. This was due to the shrinking funding resources supported by the donors and the ever increasing demands of the working poor. The findings indicated that the licensed microfinance institutions were profit oriented organizations, which operated mostly on individual loan to the viable clients. The vulnerable and short term vision of sustainability and growth was due to dependence on the international funding sources and limited local saving. In the view of operational sustainability, these MFIs were showing the continuous increase of the repayment rate, number of clients and amount of loan outstanding. These were due to the strict eligible criteria and the growing demand of loan. However, they tended not to have financial sustainability due to the high operational costs. Also, their limited outreach to the central areas was the constraint to optimum use of available resources.

Book Description

Joe Bucket is a hard-bitten English ex-pat who first came to Pattaya when it was little more than a fishing village. He is an ordinary guy who likes beer, football and fishing -- and loves Thai women even more.

But with the great changes the city has undergone, perhaps it was inevitable that, after twenty-five years, even the fantastic had become familiar.

That was until Joe met old Ron, a retired merchant seaman in a wheelchair who was not long for this world. The shrewd old seafarer persuaded Joe to carry out a last task for him, and the next thing the Pattaya old-hand knew, he was bound for Sihanoukville in Cambodia to search for a Khmer bar-girl the fading seafarer desperately needed to find.

Accompany Joe Bucket from Pattaya to Cambodia and on his adventures among the streets, bars, brothels and beaches of Sihanoukville and let him introduce you to the gangsters, hookers and other misfits he meets along the way.

Visa Run is written with humour and feeling and insight into the steamy worlds of Pattaya and Sihanoukville. The book is also filled with information of the sort that you certainly will not find in conventional travel guides.

Book Description

This book celebrates and documents the resurgence of dance in Cambodia after the fall of the Khmer Rouge and the infamous Pol Pot regime. It honours the remarkable commitment of the few remaining masters of the art of dance who are reviving and preserving the famous classical dances, as well as the courage and resolution of young artists who are imaginatively pursuing their passion to forge new paths in contemporary dance. n 2003, Cambodian classical dance was awarded world heritage status by UNESCO – this confirmed the importance, and perhaps the burden, of the task of preservation. This volume includes contributions from the royal family, eminent writers and commentators and the dancers themselves.

Monuments and reminders of the Killing Fields abound in the city of Phnom Penh. Nearly 2 million Cambodians, including many artists, perished during the killings or died of starvation and disease during the Khmer Rouge years. Today, the dancers, both young and old, move towards the future while respecting and honouring the past. This volume documents their journey.

Book Description

A remarkable group of seven bronze figures was unearthed in Kampong Cham province, Cambodia, in 2006. These sixth- and seventh-century Buddhist sculptures, two of which were Chinese, ultimately were acquired by the National Museum of Cambodia. There they became one of the first projects of the institution's Metal Conservation Laboratory, created with the assistance of the Department of Conservation and Scientific Research at the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery.

Gods of Angkor celebrates not only the collaborative efforts of the Cambodian and U.S. museums to restore and interpret these important images, but also the accomplishments of Khmer bronze casters from the fourth century BCE to the fourteenth century CE. The authors decipher the makeup and meaning of bronze figural images, ritual vessels, and other objects, placing them in the context of Southeast Asian life and worship from prehistoric times through the pre-Angkorian and Angkorian eras. Together, the bronzes reveal vivid details of the significance of this important medium within Khmer culture and of the artistic and religious interactions of the Khmer with their neighbors.

Book Description

Late industrializing countries are able to pick strategies for economic development based on the experiences of countries that preceded them. Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (the CLMV countries) were closed off from the international community for many years, and each began to embrace a market economy at around the same time. Each bypassed the import-substitution strategy adopted by other Southeast Asian countries and began industrialization efforts with export growth funded by Foreign Direct Investment.

The outcomes differed significantly owing to geographical location, government policies, and internal economic conditions. 'Industrialization in Late-Developing ASEAN Countries' explores these differences through case studies based on an extended research program conducted by the Institute of Developing Economies, which offered insights into models of economic growth, and into the trajectories followed by the four countries examined.
